Black Hills BMW Adopt-a-Highway Procedure

Before Pick-up

  1. Decide on a Sunday in September or October.  (don’t know how long after that the restroom will be open)

  2. Contact Connie at the DOT office in Custer @ 605-673-4948.  Let her know earlier in the week when we’ll be picking up trash.  She lets the DOT crew know so the bags can be picked up.  We put the orange bags below our Adopt-a-Highway sign at the bottom of Highway 16A just outside of Keystone.

  3. Contact Krystal at the DOT office in Rapid City @ 605-394-2244.  Let her know the date of pick-up.  Go to the Rapid City DOT office to pick up orange bags and yellow vests if needed.  2300 Eglin Street.

Pick-up Day

  1.  Put up the Adopt-a-Highway signs.  (be careful of wasps, I think a crescent wrench is needed)

  2.  Bring copies of the newest map for section assignments.  Those with bikes can ride to their sections and leave their bags on the right side of the road for the person in-charge to pick up in their vehicle.

  3. Take down the Adopt-a-Highway sign at Norbeck Overlook.

  4. Pick up any people needing rides back to the Picnic ground.

  5. Pick up the orange bags on the way down to Keystone and deposit them by our BMW sign.

  6. Take down the Adopt-a-Highway sign at the bottom of Highway 16A.

Per DOT, participants should wear safety vest and wear gloves.  Do not pick up any hypodermic needles.
